The Castle

Umbria, Italy

36 Rooms & suites

The Castle sits within a 3,700-acre estate on the border of Umbria and Tuscany. You are surrounded by hills, woodland and the Niccone Valley, with a 10th-century castle at the centre of it all. Inside, 36 rooms and suites combine the old stonework with custom furniture, local antiques and comfortable living spaces. Come for a few days and you could spend your time riding through the countryside, swimming, eating well or simply enjoying the quiet.

YOUR STAY

The castle has plenty of history, but you won't feel as though you've stepped into a museum. Original stone walls, old courtyards and the shape of the fortress remain, while the interiors have been made warm and comfortable.

Each room has its own character. Bespoke furniture, campaign beds and local antiques sit alongside the original architecture, giving the accommodation a relaxed country-house feel.

Some of the rooms are in the main castle, while six San Michele Suites are located in the adjoining Parish House. This gives larger groups a little more flexibility without taking them too far from the main estate.

The Tower Suite is something a little different. Spread over five floors, it has two bedrooms, private living areas and a rooftop terrace with an outdoor hot tub. Spend some time up there and you'll have views across the surrounding countryside.

There are no televisions in the rooms, either. Instead, you get a good excuse to put your phone away, sit outside and enjoy the setting.

THE RESCHIO ESTATE & OUTDOOR LIFE

With 3,700 acres around you, there is plenty of countryside to explore.

Horse riding is a big part of life at the estate. Head to the Reschio Equestrian Centre, meet the horses and set off with a trainer along the forest tracks and surrounding trails.

You can also explore on foot or by mountain bike. Go out early while the air is cool, stop somewhere along the way and come back whenever you're ready.

If you're visiting during truffle season, join a local truffle hunter and their dogs in the woods. It is a slower way to explore the estate, but you get to see a different side of the landscape.

The estate also has tennis courts, a lake for fishing and boating, and plenty of open space for simply wandering around.

Or don't do much at all. Find a quiet place, sit down and enjoy having so much countryside around you.

WELLNESS & RELAXATION

The spa is tucked inside the old vaulted cellars of the castle. The setting alone makes it worth spending some time there.

Start with the hammam, move into the Swedish sauna or warm up in the tepidarium before a treatment. You can take your time and move between the spaces without feeling as though you have to follow a schedule.

Outside, the 32-metre oval pool sits among the lawns and umbrella pines. Go for an early swim, spend the afternoon beside the water or come down later when the grounds are quieter.

Treatments and massages can be arranged when you want a little extra time to yourself.

For something less structured, take a walk around the estate. After a busy day of activities, a few hours outside could be all you need.

FOOD & EVENINGS

Food at The Castle has a strong connection to Umbria. Local produce features across the menus, with ingredients such as estate olive oil, honey and wine adding a sense of place to the meals.

Start the morning with breakfast and take your time. There is no need to rush out just because you have a full day ahead.

Later, return from the countryside and sit down for lunch before deciding what to do next. Perhaps you'll head back out. Perhaps you'll stay around the castle.

The Palm Court gives you somewhere to meet for a drink. Its glass-enclosed setting works well in the evening, particularly when you want to sit somewhere comfortable and talk for a while.

On warmer nights, an outdoor film gives you another option. Settle down under the stars and let the evening run a little later than planned.

And if you'd rather keep things simple, dinner, a bottle of wine and good company are usually enough.

PRIVACY & SERVICE

The size of the estate gives you plenty of space to spread out. With 3,700 acres surrounding the castle, you can spend much of the day exploring without needing to leave the property.

A dedicated team takes care of the practical side of your stay. Concierge assistance is available for restaurant bookings, activities, transfers and experiences around the estate.

Want to spend the afternoon on horseback? That can be arranged. Fancy a truffle hunt? Ask the team. Perhaps you'd rather have a quiet day around the pool instead.

The Parish House suites also work well for larger groups. Everyone stays within the same estate while still having somewhere private to retreat to.

You don't have to fill every day with plans. Leave some space in the itinerary and see what you feel like doing when you wake up.
