Farnborough vs Biggin Hill vs Luton vs Stansted: Which London Private Jet Airport Is Best?
If you are chartering a private jet from London, choosing the right airport can save more time than choosing a faster aircraft.
For most private flyers, the four airports worth comparing are Farnborough, London Biggin Hill, London Luton and London Stansted.
There is no single winner.
Farnborough is our choice for the best overall private aviation experience.
Biggin Hill is particularly convenient for Central, South and parts of East London.
Luton works well for North London and offers greater operating-hour flexibility.
Stansted is particularly strong for very large aircraft, late operations and passengers travelling to or from the City and East London.
The right answer depends on where you are starting in London, your departure time, aircraft type and destination.

Published operating hours and restrictions can change, so they should always be reconfirmed when arranging a charter. Farnborough publishes weekday operating hours of 07:00–22:00 and weekend/bank-holiday hours of 08:00–20:00. Biggin Hill publishes 06:30–23:00 on weekdays and 08:00–22:00 at weekends and public holidays.
Harrods Aviation describes its Luton facility as operating 24 hours, subject to summer restrictions. Stansted itself operates 24 hours a day, although night quota restrictions apply.

Best overall: Farnborough
If the schedule works and you want the most complete private aviation experience, Farnborough would usually be our first choice.
It exists specifically for business aviation rather than combining private jets with millions of scheduled airline passengers.
Best for Central and South London: Biggin Hill
If you are travelling from areas such as Chelsea, Belgravia, Westminster, Battersea, Dulwich or much of South London, Biggin Hill can make considerable sense.
The airport says it is just 15 miles from Central London and 12 miles from Canary Wharf. It also offers a dedicated helicopter shuttle with a published flight time of approximately six minutes into London.
Best for North London: Luton
For passengers based in areas such as Hampstead, St John's Wood or further north into Hertfordshire, Luton may save significant ground-transfer time compared with driving southwest to Farnborough.
Its longer operating window can also make it valuable for trips returning to London late at night.
Best for very large aircraft: Stansted
For the largest aircraft and more unusual missions, Stansted has a major advantage: runway capability.
Stansted says it has the only 3,000m-plus runway with significant runway capacity in the London Terminal region. It is accustomed to everything from private aircraft to Head-of-State movements.
1. Farnborough Airport: Best overall private jet experience
Farnborough is the airport we would consider first when the passenger experience itself is the priority.
Unlike Luton and Stansted, Farnborough is centred around business aviation rather than scheduled commercial flights.
The experience is consequently very different from arriving at a normal international airport and then being separated into a private terminal.
Farnborough's passenger facilities are designed around privacy, speed and discretion. The airport even allows vehicles to drive directly to an awaiting aircraft in appropriate circumstances. It says the drive from Farnborough to Central London can be completed in under 60 minutes, traffic permitting.
Why choose Farnborough?
The biggest attraction isn't necessarily distance.
It is predictability and experience.
For someone chartering a Gulfstream, Global, Falcon or Challenger, Farnborough feels like an airport designed around that journey from beginning to end.
Its runway has approximately 2,000 metres of take-off run available depending on direction, with full published business-aviation infrastructure.
The drawback
The obvious limitation is operating hours.
Farnborough currently publishes:
Monday–Friday: 07:00–22:00
Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays: 08:00–20:00
So if your flight is scheduled to return from Ibiza at midnight on a Sunday, Farnborough may simply not be an option.
That is why choosing a London airport should happen before simply choosing the nicest FBO.
Who should use Farnborough?
We would particularly consider Farnborough for:
passengers based in West and South-West London
high-value business trips
transatlantic private flights
passengers prioritising privacy
families wanting the smoothest possible departure experience
passengers connecting by chauffeur from Surrey or Berkshire
Our verdict: 9/10
For a conventional daytime private charter, Farnborough is very difficult to beat.
2. London Biggin Hill: Best for getting into London quickly
Biggin Hill has one enormous advantage:
location.
It describes itself as just 12 miles from Canary Wharf and 15 miles from Central London. Unlike Luton and Stansted, it sits to the south-east of the centre rather than well beyond London's northern edge.
For the right passenger, that can matter far more than the difference between two private terminals.
The six-minute helicopter transfer
Biggin Hill has another unusual advantage.
Its dedicated London Heli Shuttle connects the airport with London heliports, with the airport advertising a flight time of approximately six minutes. The service also includes onward chauffeured transport.
For a traveller whose priority is reducing total journey time rather than simply spending less time in the aircraft, this is compelling.
Biggin Hill operating hours
Biggin Hill currently publishes:
Monday–Friday: 06:30–23:00
Weekends and Public Holidays: 08:00–22:00
The airport also says no runway slots are required, which can provide useful operational flexibility.
The limitation: runway length
Biggin Hill's runway is 1,806 metres long.
That does not make it unsuitable for serious business jets, but runway length, weather, payload, fuel requirement and aircraft performance all matter.
For a short European trip, the calculation may be completely different from a fully fuelled ultra-long-range flight.
This is why a charter broker or operator should check the actual mission, rather than simply saying an aircraft type “can” or “cannot” use Biggin Hill.
An interesting advantage for passengers with pets
Biggin Hill is also a designated UK Port of Entry and operates its SkyPets service for qualifying pet arrivals.
For families regularly travelling privately with dogs, that can become surprisingly important.
Who should use Biggin Hill?
We would particularly consider it for:
passengers in Central or South London
passengers travelling to Canary Wharf
short and medium-haul European charters
travellers prioritising total door-to-door journey time

For the right London postcode, Biggin Hill may actually be more convenient than Farnborough.
3. London Luton: Best for North London and flexibility
Luton is different.
It is a major commercial airport, but it also has a significant private aviation operation with dedicated facilities separate from the normal passenger terminals.
London Luton Airport lists both Harrods Aviation and Signature Flight Support among its business and private aviation providers.
Harrods Aviation's Luton FBO, The Omnia, operates separately from the normal commercial experience and is designed for private passengers, high-profile travellers and larger groups. Harrods says the facility can handle aircraft up to Boeing 767 size.
Why we like Luton
The major advantage is flexibility.
Harrods publishes its Luton FBO as operating 24 hours, although it specifically notes that summer restrictions apply between June and October.
That makes Luton useful when a client's timetable does not fit neatly within Farnborough or Biggin Hill's hours.
Imagine a return from dinner in Ibiza, Mykonos or the South of France.
If your aircraft cannot arrive back until late at night, airport operating hours suddenly become far more important than which terminal has the nicest lounge.
Location matters
Harrods gives the distance from London as approximately 30 miles.
That sounds like a disadvantage until you consider where the passenger actually lives.
For somebody in Hampstead or North London, driving to Luton may be much more logical than travelling across or around London to Farnborough.
For somebody in Chelsea, the opposite might be true.
This is why we would never choose a private jet airport based purely on which one is technically “closest to London”.
The important number is:
door to aircraft.
The drawback
Luton remains a busy commercial airport.
The private aviation facilities are separate, but your aircraft is still operating within a larger scheduled-airline environment.
For passengers prioritising the feeling of an entirely private aviation ecosystem, Farnborough generally has the advantage.

We would particularly consider Luton for:
North London passengers
Hertfordshire residents
late arrivals and departures
large private aircraft
larger travelling parties
missions where Farnborough's opening hours do not work

Luton may not feel as exclusive as Farnborough, but operationally it can be extremely useful.
4. London Stansted: Best for large aircraft and East London
Stansted is sometimes overlooked when people think about London private jets.
It shouldn't be.
The airport has substantial business-aviation infrastructure and a runway of more than 3,000 metres. Stansted says it is the only airport in the London Terminal region combining a 3,000m-plus runway with significant spare runway capacity.
That makes it particularly attractive for large aircraft and demanding missions.
Multiple private terminals
Stansted says it has five FBOs, giving business aviation passengers several handling options.
Harrods Aviation alone operates two facilities at Stansted: The Brompton, aimed at private aviation, and The Knightsbridge, which specialises in Head-of-State flights.
Stansted has considerable experience dealing with high-security and VIP movements.
24-hour operations
The airport itself operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, although night quota restrictions apply between 23:30 and 06:00.
Again, “24 hours” should never be interpreted as meaning that every aircraft can depart or arrive whenever it likes.
Slots, noise restrictions and aircraft-specific rules still need checking for each flight.
What about travelling into London?
Stansted says the journey by road to Canary Wharf and the City can be around 45 minutes in favourable conditions.
For somebody travelling to Mayfair, Farnborough or Biggin Hill may be more attractive.
For somebody travelling to the City, East London, Essex or parts of North London, Stansted becomes considerably more competitive.
Who should use Stansted?
We would particularly consider it for:
very large private aircraft
BBJ/ACJ-style missions
Heads of State and complex VIP movements
passengers travelling to East London or the City
flights requiring greater operating-hour flexibility
missions where runway length is a major consideration

It is not always the obvious luxury choice, but for certain aircraft and schedules, Stansted is the most practical London airport.
Which London private jet airport would we actually choose?
The mistake is trying to identify a single “best” airport.
We would instead choose by passenger.
If you live in Chelsea or Belgravia
Farnborough or Biggin Hill.
Farnborough for the complete private aviation experience; Biggin Hill where road conditions or schedules make its proximity more attractive.
If you live in Hampstead
Luton.
There is little sense travelling significantly further simply because another airport has a more prestigious reputation.
If you are travelling to Canary Wharf
Biggin Hill deserves serious consideration.
It is only 12 miles from Canary Wharf according to the airport, with the additional option of the London Heli Shuttle.
If you need to return to London very late
Luton or Stansted.
Both provide much greater operating-hour flexibility than Farnborough, although aircraft-specific and seasonal night restrictions must still be checked.
If you are chartering a particularly large aircraft
Stansted should be on the shortlist immediately.
Its 3,000m-plus runway and established VIP infrastructure give it an obvious operational advantage.
If money isn't the main consideration and you simply want the best private airport experience
Farnborough.
It is the one of these four that most completely feels designed around the private passenger.
Can choosing a different London airport change the charter price?
Yes.
Two identical aircraft flying to the same destination can produce different quotations depending on the London airport selected.
The final price can be affected by:
aircraft positioning
landing and handling charges
parking
airport slots
departure time
crew duty hours
night restrictions
where the aircraft is based before your flight
where it needs to position after dropping you off
This creates an important distinction between the cheapest aircraft and the cheapest complete journey.
An aircraft already positioned at Luton may be better value than moving another aircraft into Farnborough purely because Farnborough is the passenger's first-choice airport.
Equally, saving money on the aircraft but adding an hour to the passenger's chauffeur transfer may be a poor trade-off.

4. Stansted — Best for specialist missions
The strongest choice when runway length, aircraft size, East London access or complex VIP operations matter more than having a dedicated private airport.
But our ranking would change depending on the passenger.
A client in Hampstead returning from Ibiza at midnight has a completely different “best airport” from a client leaving Chelsea for New York at 10am.
That is the point.
With private aviation, the best airport is the airport that makes the entire journey faster and easier — not simply the airport with the best-known name.
