Mamula Island

Montenegro

32 Rooms & Suites

Mamula Island gives you a rather unusual place to stay in Montenegro. The hotel occupies a 19th-century fortress at the entrance to Boka Bay, with the Adriatic all around you and the Montenegrin coast in the distance. Old stone walls and watchtowers remain, but inside you'll find 32 comfortable rooms and suites, open courtyards and plenty of space outside. Arrive by boat or air, put your bags down and take your time settling into island life.

YOUR STAY

The old fortress is still very much part of the experience. Walk through the stone corridors, pass the old watchtowers and look closely at the masonry. You get reminders of the building's past without having to give up the comforts you expect from a luxury stay.

Inside your room, things are more relaxed. Contemporary furniture and natural materials sit against the original stone, while modern technology makes everyday things simple.

During the day, you have plenty of places to disappear to. Take your coffee into one of the courtyards, sit somewhere quiet with a book or head outside and watch the boats moving across the bay.

Each room and suite has its own feel. Some make more of the fortress architecture, while others give you more direct views towards the sea and outdoor spaces.

Travelling with a larger group? The 32 rooms and suites give everyone their own space when they need it. Meet for breakfast, spend the afternoon together and then go your separate ways for a while.

There is always somewhere to come back to.

THE ADRIATIC & BOKA BAY

Step outside and you'll soon notice how much of your stay revolves around the water.

Take a boat from the island and spend a few hours exploring Boka Bay. Stop for a swim if you find somewhere quiet, have lunch beside the water or simply stay on board and enjoy the afternoon.

Herceg Novi is close enough when you fancy a change. Spend a few hours on the mainland, wander around the town and come back to Mamula later in the day.

Then again, you might not feel like going anywhere.

Walk around the fortress instead. Find a spot beside the water, sit on the terrace or take a slow walk as the afternoon light moves across the bay.

If you want to see more of Montenegro, speak to the concierge. Private boat trips, guides and excursions can all be arranged around the way you want to spend your day.

By evening, everything feels a little quieter. The boats thin out, the water settles and the fortress takes on a different atmosphere.

POOLS & WELLNESS

There are several places around Mamula where you can swim or simply sit and enjoy the afternoon. The outdoor pools sit among the old fortress walls, so you get an interesting mix of weathered stone, open sky and water.

The spa occupies part of the historic fortress too. Once you're inside, the pace slows down.

Book a treatment, spend some time in the thermal areas or warm up in the sauna and hammam. You don't need to rush from one thing to another.

Yoga and meditation give you another reason to slow the day down. Find a quiet place, spend some time there and look out towards the Adriatic.

For those days when you want to exercise properly, the fitness centre is available too. Once you've finished, head back outside for a swim or claim a lounger for the rest of the afternoon.

Sometimes that's all you need.

FOOD & EVENINGS

Meals at Mamula take inspiration from Montenegro and the wider Mediterranean, with local ingredients featuring across the menus.

You could start with breakfast before heading out on the water, although there is nothing wrong with taking your time in the morning either. Come back for lunch later, sit outside and enjoy the view while you eat.

As the afternoon fades, stay outside for a little longer. Order a drink, find a table overlooking the sea and let dinner happen at its own pace.

Afterwards, you can move between the indoor and outdoor lounges. Stay with your friends for another drink, find somewhere quieter or simply keep talking until you realise how late it has become.

The wine cellar is there for longer dinners and special occasions. Choose a bottle, settle in and make an evening of it.

PRIVACY & SERVICE

The island itself gives you a natural sense of separation. Once you've crossed the water, the mainland feels much further away than it really is.

A team of hosts, butlers, housekeepers and managers takes care of the practical side of your stay. You get help when you want it without having someone constantly in your way.

Maybe tomorrow starts with a boat trip. Perhaps you'd rather have a private guide take you along the coast. Tell the concierge what you're thinking and the arrangements can be made.

With 32 rooms and several shared areas, larger groups also have room to spread out. You can spend the morning together, disappear for the afternoon and meet again over dinner.

And if you don't feel like leaving Mamula at all, that's fine too. Swim, eat, sit outside and enjoy having nowhere else you need to be.
