Gundari

Folegandros, Greece

27 Suites & Villas

Gundari sits on the southeastern side of Folegandros, looking out across the Aegean Sea. You have 80 acres of protected landscape around you, along with 27 suites and villas built into the rocky hillside. More than half of the accommodation is set into the cliffs, which gives the property a very different feel from a typical island resort. Spend the morning in the pool, walk down towards the coast or stay on your terrace and watch the sea.

YOUR STAY

The first thing you notice at Gundari is the stone. Local limestone, marble and timber are used throughout the property, helping the buildings feel like part of the landscape rather than something dropped onto it.

Several of the suites are built directly into the hillside. You get the feel of a private cave, but with plenty of space, comfortable furnishings and large openings towards the Aegean.

Inside, things stay fairly simple. Natural materials, soft linens and earthy colours keep the rooms calm, while the views do most of the decorating.

Your terrace gives you somewhere to spend a good part of the day. Have breakfast outside, stretch out on a daybed or take a dip in your private pool whenever you feel like it.

Some of the larger villas give families and groups more room, with separate bedrooms and living areas. That means you can travel together without everyone having to share the same space all day.

Come evening, the light changes across the cliffs and the sea. Grab a drink, put some music on and stay outside until you feel like heading in.

FOLEGANDROS & THE AEGEAN

There is plenty to explore beyond Gundari, although you may find it difficult to leave the view behind.

Walk through the surrounding landscape and you'll see the more rugged side of Folegandros. The island is quieter than some of the better-known Cycladic destinations, with dry hills, stone paths and stretches of coastline to discover.

If you want to get onto the water, your concierge can arrange a private yacht or boat trip. Spend the day visiting secluded bays, swimming in clear water and stopping somewhere for lunch.

Chora is another option when you feel like seeing more of the island. Wander through its narrow streets, find somewhere for a drink and come back to Gundari when you're ready.

Perhaps you want something more adventurous. Private excursions and guides can be arranged around the island, depending on how you want to spend the day.

Or stay close to home. With the Aegean in front of you and the landscape all around, there is no shortage of reasons to stay put.

WELLNESS & RELAXATION

Gundari's spa is built into the rock, keeping you close to the landscape even when you're inside.

Book a massage after a morning in the sun or spend some time with one of the property's wellness treatments. Therapies draw on local herbs and traditional Greek practices, with treatments arranged around what you need during your stay.

The mineral pool gives you somewhere else to unwind. Move between the warm water and cooler areas, then take your time before heading back outside.

Yoga takes place in the open air, with the Aegean stretching out in front of you. Early morning sessions give you a particularly quiet start to the day.

There is also a fitness studio if you want to keep up with your training. Afterwards, a swim or a treatment might be all you need.

When none of that sounds appealing, your own terrace is waiting. Lie down, read for a while and let the afternoon pass.

FOOD & EVENINGS

Meals at Gundari are centred around contemporary Aegean cooking, with ingredients coming from the property's own garden and local producers.

Start the morning with breakfast outside while the island is still quiet. Later, you could sit down for lunch at Orizon or have something arranged around your own plans.

The restaurant sits on the cliffs, so you get the sea as part of the setting. Fresh local ingredients and Cycladic flavours feature throughout the menus.

Come evening, stay for a drink at the bar and watch the sun go down. Dinner can stretch on for as long as your group wants it to.

Back at your suite, put on a record and open the doors towards the terrace. You might have planned an early night, but the view has a habit of changing your mind.

PRIVACY & SERVICE

Gundari's position gives you plenty of separation from the busier parts of Folegandros. The accommodation is spread across the hillside, with each suite and villa having its own outdoor space.

A dedicated team looks after your stay, from meals and housekeeping to transport and activities. You can keep your plans simple or ask the concierge to arrange something more involved.

Want to spend tomorrow on a yacht? Ask the team. Looking for a private guide around the island? That can be arranged too.

For larger groups, the villas give you more space to come together while still allowing everyone to have somewhere private.

There is no need to plan every hour. One day could be spent exploring Folegandros from morning until evening. The next might involve nothing more than breakfast, a swim and a long afternoon on your terrace.
