Christmas and New Year by Private Jet: When Should You Book for St. Barths, Maldives and the Caribbean?

Many wealthy travellers still plan Christmas and New Year by Private Jet the way they'd book a favourite restaurant: a few weeks out, with one quick call.

However, certain things decide whether your holiday starts with a smooth landing or a scramble.

The short answer

  • Start your enquiries in September and aim to confirm by early November.

  • Plan for peak-day pricing, limited parking and tight airport slots from about December 19 to January 3.

  • Remember that jets can't land at St Barths, so line up your Sint Maarten connection early.

  • Ask your operator about parking, repositioning and crew costs before you compare prices.

Christmas and New Year by Private Jet

Why Christmas and New Year by Private Jet Is Busier Than Ever

More of the world is flying private. WingX data reported by SherpaReport counts 1.95 million business jet departures worldwide in the first half of 2026, up 4% on the same period last year.

Holiday demand is where the squeeze really shows. Forbes reported that Flexjet's bookings were running 42% ahead of the previous year over a two-week stretch last November, and the company expected its busiest holiday period in 30 years. You're competing with all of those bookings for the same aircraft.

Now add the calendar. These are the days you should expect to be hardest:

  • Outbound rush: the weekend of December 19 to 20, plus Wednesday, December 23.

  • Villa wave: December 26 to 30, when New Year guests arrive.

  • Return rush: Saturday, January 2 and Sunday, January 3.

Steve Ciancio, senior vice president of private aviation solutions at Magellan Jets, gave simple advice for busy return days last year, and it still holds. His tip: “Book earlier in the morning or later in the evening.” Midday departures are where delays pile up.

Your Booking Timeline for Christmas and New Year by Private Jet

Most people call in late November, and that's the problem. One broker says holiday requests start as early as late October and pick up by late November, about a month before travel. Magellan Jets adds that aircraft owners usually release holiday schedules only 30 to 45 days ahead.

So the crowd arrives just as the supply shrinks. Here's a simple way to stay ahead of it:

  1. Now to early October: Send your dates, group size, bags and preferred airports. Ask for a few aircraft options and a flexible-date quote.

  2. Mid October to early November: Confirm your aircraft, permits, parking and handling. Pay the deposit so nothing slips.

  3. Mid November: Lock in ground transport, catering, passports and villa handover times.

  4. December: Fine-tune only. Any big change now costs more.

What Drives the Price of Christmas and New Year by Private Jet

Prices rise for reasons you can see coming, which is good news if you plan early. Here are the five that matter most:

  • Peak-day surcharges: Operators price by scarcity. The same broker forecast last year that holiday charter pricing would run about 25% above the yearly average.

  • Positioning flights: Your jet often has to fly to your departure airport empty, then fly home empty again. These "deadhead" legs add real cost when everyone wants the same direction on the same day.

  • Airport parking and handling: Space is limited, and fixed-base operators (FBOs) get crowded. Holiday hours can also be shorter, so late arrivals cost extra or aren't possible.

  • Crew costs: Universal Weather says crew rooms at popular islands can run $300 to over $800 a night, often with strict cancellation rules. That cost lands in your quote if the crew stays with the jet.

  • Empty legs: These are cheaper flights on aircraft repositioning without passengers. They're rare in the busiest direction on the busiest days, so don't build your holiday around one.

Together, these costs grow when your options shrink. That's why waiting until December can cost more than the hourly rate suggests.

St Barths by Private Jet: The Airport Your Jet Can't Use

Here's the fact that surprises many first-time guests. Gustaf III Airport has a runway of just 2,119 feet. It opens at 7 a.m. and closes 15 minutes after sunset, with no night flights.

Your jet lands at Princess Juliana (SXM) on Sint Maarten instead. From there you take a short hop on a smaller aircraft, such as a 19-seat Twin Otter, or a ferry. Because the runway has no lights, a late arrival usually means a night in Sint Maarten.

Tradewind Aviation co-founder David Zipkin told Yahoo Lifestyle that “St Barts is unmatched this time of year.” The small aircraft and daylight windows are limited, so you'll want your connection booked at the same time as your jet.

Villas often set minimum stays over the festive weeks, so check yours before you fix flight dates. Your arrival day at St Jean Beach and your villa check-in time should fit inside the daylight window.

The Maldives by Private Jet: Where Parking Decides Everything

About 2.25 million visitors came to the Maldives in 2025. Early January 2026 brought a single-day high of 8,082 arrivals at Velana International Airport on January 3. Your festive dates sit right in that rush.

Private jets are growing faster. Maldives Airports Company Limited figures show 128 private jets landed between February 28 and March 14, up 166% on the 70 a year earlier. The jump came as Middle East disruption hit commercial routes, and one day saw a record 18 jets.

Maafaru International Airport, the northern airfield popular with private jets, tells a sharper story. Airport management says its expansion lifted capacity to around 800 movements a year, and it handled 804 in 2025. Earlier seasons saw 50 to 80 aircraft turned away for lack of apron space.

Velana can park up to 40 private jets, according to one local handler, but festive periods are the exception. If your jet can't stay, it may have to fly out empty and return for you.

Flying from Europe usually calls for a long-range aircraft, which narrows your choice even more. Seaplane transfers to many resorts often run in daylight only, so plan your landing time with your resort.

Caribbean Airports: Slots, Parking and Permits

Smaller islands have smaller ramps. Universal Weather's 2025-26 Caribbean guide shows how tight things get:

  • St Maarten (SXM): A slot is needed from December 20 to January 10, with a 15-minute window, and the guide says the requirement repeats every year. Parking is often capped at 1 to 1.5 hours, and the busiest hours run from noon to 5 p.m. If there's no room, jets reposition to Grand Case or Antigua.

  • Anguilla (AXA): The airport is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Parking is limited over Christmas and New Year, so you need it confirmed in advance. Charter permits usually need about three business days.

  • Turks and Caicos (PLS): Overtime approvals are very limited after 7:30 p.m., so evening arrivals are risky.

  • Antigua and Barbados: Both are handy fallback and tech-stop options. Barbados charter permits typically need about five business days.

The catch is timing. Airports often confirm parking only 24 to 72 hours before you land, so an early request doesn't guarantee a spot.

That's why a good operator plans your parking, permits and a backup airport in September, not December.

Minimum Stays: Wait, Drop and Go, or Reposition?

Every festive trip comes down to one question: what does your jet do while you're on holiday? You have three choices:

  1. Stay with you: This is simple and flexible, but you pay for parking, crew hotels and waiting time. Where parking is tight, it may not even be possible.

  2. Drop and go: The jet leaves after you land and returns for your departure. You avoid parking costs but pay for extra positioning flights.

  3. Reposition nearby: The jet parks at a backup airport, such as Antigua or Grand Case, and returns when you call.

Universal Weather notes that even at the busiest times it's usually still possible to drop, go and reposition. Your operator can price all three side by side, and the best pick depends on trip length and local parking. Long villa minimums can change the maths, so share your stay dates early.

A Festive Travel Checklist for PAs and Advisors

Save this list for your next planning call:

  • Passports valid for the whole stay, plus visas where needed

  • Permits and parking confirmed in writing

  • Slot times for SXM if you're landing between December 20 and January 10

  • Backup airport agreed, such as Antigua or Grand Case

  • Daylight cut-offs checked for St Barths, Anguilla and seaplane transfers

  • Ground transport, villa check-in times and catering locked

  • Hotel rooms and standby costs for the crew included in your quote

Christmas and New Year by Private Jet: Quick Answers

When should I book a private jet for Christmas and New Year?

Begin your enquiries in September and confirm by early November. Requests build fast in late November, and owners often release schedules only 30 to 45 days out.

Can a private jet land in St Barths?

No. The runway is too short for jets, so you'll land at Princess Juliana on Sint Maarten and connect on a smaller aircraft or ferry.

Why is parking such a problem in the Maldives?

Space is limited at the airfields that handle private jets, and demand jumps at New Year. Maafaru handled 804 movements in 2025 against capacity of around 800.

Are empty legs a good idea over Christmas?

Rarely, if your dates are fixed. Operators want peak-direction aircraft earning money, so treat any empty leg you find as a bonus, not a plan.

What does waiting until December really cost?

Waiting means higher peak-day pricing, fewer aircraft and tighter parking. Some airports confirm parking only 24 to 72 hours before arrival, so late planners have less room to adapt.
